Michał Krych, Poland

Posted Monday 5 February 2026

[Michał Krych]

For 51 years, Michał Krych was a member of the Regional Committee of the Mathematical Olympiad in Warsaw, serving as its Chair for 31 years. Moreover, for 15 years he was a member of the Main Committee of the Mathematical Olympiad, all the time serving as the Vice-Chair of the Main Committee. As the work in the regional committee and the Main Committee are, practically, disjoint, the years during which Krych worked in both Committees should be counted twice; this amounts to 66 years of active work for Polish Mathematical Olympiad. It should be noted that Krych’s work there was really amazing and extremely remarkable. In the publication area, for many years (Olympiads 1–63) Krych published the special annual reports on Polish Mathematical Olympiads. They contained all the problems, all the solutions (usually more than one), the list of finalists and winners, the list of members of the Olympiad Committees. Each issue has about 100 pages, sometimes more. Unfortunately, mainly of financial reasons, since 64 Olympiad these reports has not been published. These are very valuable positions and shortly after publication each issue was, in fact, unattainable. Thanks to Krych’s efforts all 63 issues were scanned. Michał Krych's work in mathematics competitions is not limited to competitions for school pupils. For 33 years the University College of London has been organizing the International Mathematics Competition for University Students, for university students from all over the world. Michał Krych regularly attends these competitions as the supervisor of the University of Warsaw team, while also being (like other supervisors) a member of the jury. In addition to marking, the jury prepares the topics for the tasks, and Michał Krych's role in this jury has been important – for many years he was one of the jurors who was also included in the Jury d'Appel. Michał Krych not only gives overview lectures, but also writes. He is the author of several articles in magazines popularizing mathematics: Delta, Mathematics-Society-Teaching and Visual Mathematics (all published in Polish). A list of some of these articles is provided (almost all of them are currently available online on the websites of these journals). When it comes to editorial work, it is worth noting that for 18 years (1989-2006) Michał Krych was a member of the Editorial Committee of the Polish Mathematical Society's journal Wiadomości Matematyczne (Mathematical News) (volumes 28-42).
